Does anyone know when we can expect things to straighten out? My collection is looking pretty screwed up right now. Did I miss an official announcement about this?

Re: interesting... |
There was an announcement it would be happening, yep. The netlabels collection is missing most of its items right now, but they're being added as we speak.
I'm not directly involved in the design of this change, but after it's all done (later today) we should get feedback on what people do and don't like about it. One good thing is that the netlabels index doesn't take 9034343 years to load now :)

I remembered that it would be happening, but I wasn't sure if there were further instructions for us re: making any necessary adjustments to our own collections.
I'll come back tonight and see how things look.
Thanks!

I'm getting streaming options on ogg vorbis files now that umm, don't work. Be nice if they did. Ogg streaming would be great! Won't get my hopes up though. ....The internet archive is the future. Thank you for existing. I love you :) xxoo (:

Re: interesting... |
...but the display of the whole sub-collections is too complex. i would prefer alphabetic order, and not to click from 1 to 8 and search and search search search. the former display was the better solution, the whole collections on one site and the number of releases. and why always show the "bigger" netlabels? why you do not choose a random show? this would be democratic....

Initial changes done - please comment. |
I don't think bigger labels _are_ shown right now. It's just Monotonik at the top, and then it goes alphabetically - ie it's not done, and I didn't put Monotonik at the top, I just want to mention :P
I believe that the initial changes are done now. Please feel free to make comments. Again, this change was done to move the items onto more secure servers that are easier to update, but there are changes in a number of the pages because of this. If we ask for things to be changed, I'm hoping this will happen!

Re: please comment. |
The first thing I noticed is that the thumbnails for the releases are messed up. That is to say, rather than using the pic intended as a thumbnail, some other uploaded pic is resized and squashed into the little space, including back cover images, which often don't look good resized like that.
How long will the server redirect old links to the new URLs? It's going to take a lot of work to edit the Webbed Hand site to reflect the new directory structures. I hope the new structure is permanent, before I start editing?
As for the netlabels page, my first feeling is that the batting average thing is not necessary. Better to just expand the "most downloaded" list. Also, the danger of starting the list of labels aphanumerically is that you're going to start getting a lot of people wanting to create netlabels with names like "0000aaa Records" just to get good positioning. I personally favored the previous thing of biggest labels, and then add a link to search or browse alphabetically.
Also, I can't seem to edit spotlight items anymore. I tried to set my latest release as the spotlight item, and the option wasn't on the edit page.

man.. I almost posted that word for word on my original post but decided to wait/forgot. Seriously.. it's eerie how close that is word for word.. im scared.
The 'biggest labels' as in terms of # of releases, has some bad trappings as well. It encourages mass uploads, seems alot of people would resort to 'singles' releases and other such things to spike this up. Also, many times those labels with the largest #s of downloads aren't the, umn,.. best ones to represent? Then again representation has never been an issue here, so thats not really a good point I guess.
Personally, I think a rotated list, sort of like the spotlight on the archive's main page, only a much longer list - would be the best solution.

Re: Initial changes done - please comment. |
hi,
Wanted to ask if there is still way to get individual tracks listed on the actual release page, like prior to today,
as all of our releases have more than 1 artist, and it is good for visitors to be able to see who is on the release, right away, rather than looking through
"Individual tracks"?
Thanks.

Re: Initial changes done - please comment. |
Even though its cosmetic, the first thing that jumps to mind is this: since the spotlight download was moved to a sidebar, the page layouts are even worse. like if a netlabel has any staff picks, the sidebars on the right are extremely long while the middle section (main section of your page) is extremely small. i havent looked through all these new advanced settings yet though, maybe you can reposition things? I think it was better when the spotlight was in the middle..
It also looks like the ability to use most html or css has been removed from the site index/description panel. I think this might have been done because people were putting Stylesheets and more in this section even though it is primarily to be used for the site description that is found from the main netlabel-archive index. That seems kind of silly doesn't it? Wouldn't it be better just to add a Description box somewhere for a netlabel to enter its description rather than to use a netlabels main panel for that?
I personally didnt use anything like this but I saw several netlabels that did, and some that even redesigned the look of their entire page (which is actually pretty nice because the archive in general suffers from the blahs). I can see this being really frustrating to netlabels that are only located @ the archive and don't have a homepage elsewhere.
Looks like someone forgot to update the forum link (even though they fixed the 'redirect after post' problem). The Netlabels link on forum posts - underneath the usernames/date/time - still points to the old url format.
Not sure I understand why the popup method was added for the individual file listings either..? Maybe the person/people workin on the site were on an extremely small screen resolution? heh.. Seriously though, it poses some problems how it's currently imployed - such as if ppl are viewing individual art or text files, etc. The popup doesnt resize accordingly, etc.
I havent tried any of the import stuff yet, has replacing an item been improved?

problems with special characters / character encoding |
something went wrong or changed.
If you look at:
http://www.archive.org/details/swm003
and
http://www.archive.org/details/sw
On the detail page the title of the release is correct. But it is not displayed correctly on the label page (nor on the edit page of the release).
Then on the detail page the tracklist also displays some strange characters.
I didn't edit the page yet, so you can see what happened.
Did the pages change from ISO 8859-1 to UTF-8?

I think we always had this problem with the search engine, and maybe it's getting a little worse now, doh. I'm going to make a canonical changes/problems list in a sec and will add it.

Re: interesting... |
Actually, I do like the fact that label descriptions/blurbs are included in the list - but the multi-page alphabetical-order layout doesn't work out so well for labels appearing more than a few pages back. It's easy to
find a specific label if you know what you're looking for, but it's probably less likely that a casual browser will get all the way through to "R" or "Y."
A randomly-selected list of spotlight
labels (instead of or in addition to the single spotlight release) on the main page might be a good idea.

Re: interesting... |
my opinion! if you know the netlabel scene then its easy to find what you want. but if you just want to browse the archive then its not clearly arranged.
i kown, its a hard work to make such an update, do not be angry ;) its just constuctive.
